associated with actual physical illness, these sorts of complaints can
be associated with stress in some children.)
In the behavioral symptoms domain, mild concerns were reported in the
areas of atypical behavior, social withdrawal, and inattention. Jason's
mother reported that he sometimes engages in behaviors that are
considered strange or odd, and at times seems disconnected from his
surrounding; he is sometimes alone, has difficulty making friends, and
is sometimes unwilling to join group activities; and he has difficulty
maintaining necessary levels of attention at times.
In the adaptive skills domain, a significant degree of concern was
reported in the area of daily living skills; his mother reported that he
has significant difficulty performing simple daily tasks in a safe and
efficient manner. Mild concerns were reported in the areas of
adaptability, social skills, and functional communication. These scores
indicate that Jason has some difficulty adapting to changing situations
and may take longer to recover from difficult situations than most
others his age. He has difficulty complimenting others and making
suggestions for improvement in a tactful and socially acceptable manner,
and has poor expressive and receptive communication skills and
difficulty seeking out information on his own. Jason continues to meet
diagnostic criteria for autism, although he has clearly made many
positive strides developmentally. His greatest area of strength is his
desire to engage others, although he continues to have social difficulty
in the form of maintaining reciprocal exchanges, modulating his eye
contact during interactions, and interacting with peers. He continues to
have significant articulation difficulties, which will contribute to his
social success with peers.
For these reasons, facilitating positive peer interactions should be an
important ongoing focus of his treatment. Although he continues to have
an expressive language delay, he no longer engages in stereotypic
